The Character of Joseph

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1: 18

There is a great deal to be said about the character of Joseph. He was a provider and a hard worker. The profession of being a carpenter is not an easy one. He was also a man that had faith. Faith to believe what Mary was telling him was true. You have to admit, the story she told seemed crazy, yet he listened to the angel and believed.

Joseph was a humble man. He humbled himself to raise Jesus as his own son even though many knew he was not the father. I am sure he was a man of great patience too. Especially, to have a part in raising a child with the wisdom and knowledge that Jesus had. I often wonder if Jesus needed correction. He was called the perfect lamb. He was God in the flesh. That would have to be tough for a father. Yet Joseph did it. Not only was Mary chosen but I believe Joseph was chosen also. Mary did not raise Jesus alone. He had an earthly father and a good one. Joseph, a man of great character! As parents and especially fathers, we should strive to have the character of Joseph. Our children will be a reflection of this character.

And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” Luke 4:22
