Jesus is...Wonderful Counselor
“And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9: 6)
Especially during the Christmas season, a favorite passage of scripture is found in Isaiah, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father Prince of Peace”….(9:6-7). However, throughout the year we have the security to know JESUS IS all those things to His children…every second, minute, hour of each day of our lives.
Throughout life, each one of us will hit an obstacle that we don’t seem to navigate well. Try as we may, we do not make progress on our own so we call in help. It may be a wise friend, a mentor or counselor that we choose to help us through.
What does scripture have to say about the “Wonderful Counselor?” In today’s vocabulary the word “wonderful” means pleasant, lovely experience, excellent and similar adjectives. It has become a generic word in the English language to basically describe events, mood, the day or anything in between, that are great. This is far from the literal meaning of “wonderful” in Isaiah’s passage. In the original language. “Wonderful” literally means, “incomprehensible.” “Miraculous,” “supernatural” or “exceeds expectation” are other clarifying words to understand the original text, to further describe our Wonderful Counselor. It is so much more than a feeling; it is the miraculous God at work changing our lives.
What does “Counselor” mean in the original language? The historical references to this word “counselor” vary from “wise King” such as Solomon…to those that would give “counsel to a King.” This word is similar to our word “counselor,” as one who uses wisdom in the form of practical application to understand, process and guide through difficult circumstances.
Putting “Wonderful Counselor” together with the original text what do we have? JESUS IS- this Wonderful Counselor-King that not only knows what you have been through and in the process of getting you through, He is your creator that has a purpose and plan for you, and knows exactly the choices, plans, decisions and releases that you need to make for safe arrival at your designed destination. This Wonderful Counselor never makes a mistake. He has perfect understanding, wisdom, timing, empathy and available 24/7. Here is the best part, His guidance is not natural—it is supernatural, miraculous and takes us to a new level that exceeds all expectations. JESUS IS the Wonderful Counselor whose guidance is absolutely INCOMPREHENSIBLE! That is what our JESUS IS.
“who became the wisdom of God.” (1Cor 1:30). Luke 2:46-47 “the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” Paul Col 2:3. In Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
